Local Dimming Test

Inspects how backlight dimming zones react to bright elements on pitch black. Features Single Center, Corner, Multiple Objects, and Grid modes with static and animated movement.

Technical Scope & Limitations

Visual inspection only. Browsers cannot detect physical backlight zone count, LED layout, or firmware dimming algorithms.

Browser rendering output can be influenced by OS display scaling, GPU driver color settings, and active HDR profiles.

Testing Instructions
  1. Run in a dark room to clearly observe backlight zone activation.
  2. Observe the black space surrounding the bright object.
  3. Check if surrounding zones stay completely dark or light up with visible halo glow.
  4. Toggle object motion (Horizontal, Vertical, Diagonal) to test zone transition responsiveness.

What This Test Checks

  • Backlight zone activation patterns around isolated bright objects on pitch black.
  • Static and animated object tracking across backlight zone boundaries.
  • Uniformity of surrounding deep blacks when local dimming is engaged.

How to Perform the Test

  • Perform this test in a dark room to clearly perceive backlight zone boundaries.
  • Enter fullscreen mode and toggle between Single Center, Multiple Objects, and Object Grid layouts.
  • Change movement between Static, Horizontal, and Diagonal to test transition latency.

What to Look For

  • Observe whether black areas far from the bright object remain completely dark, or if light bleeds across adjacent zones.

Common Display Problems & Diagnostic Guidance

Aggressive Dimming Clipping

Some local dimming firmware dims small highlights too much to hide halos, resulting in dull white objects instead of bright specular peaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this test tell me how many dimming zones my monitor has?

No. Browsers cannot query hardware zone counts. This test allows you to visually audit how effectively your display suppresses light bleed around high-contrast shapes.
