Visual Contrast Test
Presents simultaneous high-contrast and low-contrast elements across the tonal spectrum. Evaluates whether high-contrast highlights cause backlight blooming or wash out nearby shadow details.
Technical Scope & Limitations
Visual contrast inspection. Does NOT calculate physical static contrast ratio (e.g. 1000:1 or 3000:1).
Browser rendering output can be influenced by OS display scaling, GPU driver color settings, and active HDR profiles.
- Enter fullscreen mode.
- Observe the central contrast blocks across each luminance bar.
- Both the inner dark squares on dark bars and inner light squares on bright bars should remain visible simultaneously.
- Check for excessive light bleed from bright bars spilling into adjacent dark sections.
What This Test Checks
- Simultaneous dynamic range: ability to render deep blacks and bright whites on the same screen.
- Inner target visibility across progressive luminance steps.
- Backlight blooming and haloing across high-contrast edges.
How to Perform the Test
- Enter fullscreen mode.
- Look at the center squares nested inside each vertical luminance bar.
- Ensure that inner targets on both dark bars and light bars remain clearly visible.
What to Look For
- Light blooming from bright bars into dark sections indicates IPS glow or Mini-LED local dimming bleed.
- Both ends of the contrast spectrum should remain balanced.

Static Contrast Ratio Differences
IPS panels typically achieve ~1000:1 static contrast, VA panels achieve ~3000:1 to 5000:1, and OLED achieves infinite contrast. This visual test lets you observe these real-world black floor differences.

Does this test calculate my monitor contrast ratio?
No. Calculating a physical contrast ratio (e.g. 1000:1) requires an optical photodiode measuring actual candelas per square meter (cd/m²). This is an objective visual inspection tool.
